Intervention Tutor, English

Job description

Are you passionate about helping young people re-engage with education and reach their potential?

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and resilient Intervention Tutor, English to join an established alternative education provision in the Middlesbrough area.

This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate, experienced teaching assistant, tutor, cover supervisor or education professional who has a strong understanding of English and is confident supporting secondary-aged students with challenging behaviour and barriers to learning.

The Role

As an Intervention Tutor, you will work closely with secondary-aged students who are accessing education within an alternative provision setting.

Your primary focus will be English intervention and supporting students to make progress with their literacy and wider learning. You will work within the classroom and provide targeted support to help students engage positively with their education.

The role will involve:

• Delivering and supporting English-focused intervention with secondary-aged students

• Supporting students to develop their literacy, reading and written communication skills

• Working with individuals and small groups where appropriate

• Building positive, professional relationships with students

• Encouraging students who may have become disengaged from mainstream education

• Managing behaviour confidently and consistently

• Establishing clear boundaries and expectations

• Working alongside teaching and support staff to identify barriers to learning

• Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment

• Supporting students' wider educational and personal development

About You

We are looking for someone who has a genuine passion for working with young people and who can demonstrate:

• A degree-level qualification, ideally with an English, education, humanities or related background

• Previous classroom, tutoring or youth work experience

• Experience working with secondary-aged students

• Strong knowledge of English and literacy

• Excellent behaviour management skills

• Confidence supporting students who may display challenging behaviour

• The ability to remain calm, patient and consistent in difficult situations

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills

• A resilient and positive approach

Experience working within alternative provision, SEMH, SEND, PRU or similar settings would be highly desirable.

Why Apply?:

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to young people who may not have thrived in a mainstream school environment.

The provision offers a more personalised approach to education, and the successful candidate will play an important role in helping students rebuild their confidence, improve their engagement and develop their English skills.

The role offers consistent Monday to Friday hours, 9:00am to 2:00pm, making it particularly attractive to candidates looking for a regular school-based position.

Your experience, subject knowledge, ability to manage behaviour and passion for supporting young people are what matter most.

If you are an experienced education professional, graduate, tutor or aspiring teacher looking for a rewarding role within alternative provision, we'd love to hear from you.
