IT Support Engineer – Field Based (Training Provided)

Ready to take your IT career in a new direction? Are you working in IT Support, networking or a similar technical role and looking for an opportunity to develop your skills beyond the helpdesk? Perhaps you've gained experience troubleshooting IT issues, configuring equipment or supporting business networks, but haven't yet had the opportunity to get involved in customer installations and IT infrastructure projects. We're recruiting for an established IT and telecoms provider based in Wimborne that is looking for someone with a good technical foundation, practical problem-solving skills and the enthusiasm to develop into a Field Engineer. You don't need previous field engineering experience. What's important is that you already have some commercial IT experience, understand the fundamentals and are keen to learn. What's in it for you? * Salary circa £30,000, depending on experience * Company van for business use * Opportunity to develop your skills in networking, VoIP telephone systems and cloud technologies * Training and support from experienced engineers * Varied work involving customer installations, technical support and infrastructure projects * 23 days' holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 25 days after two years * Pension scheme with 3% employer contribution * Free parking What will you be doing? You'll join an established engineering team delivering IT and telecoms solutions to business customers across Dorset and the surrounding areas. The role offers a mixture of customer-site work and time in the Wimborne office, typically involving three to four days per week visiting customers and one to two days preparing equipment, planning installations and completing technical administration. Working alongside experienced colleagues, your responsibilities will develop to include: * Installing and configuring routers, switches, Wi-Fi and other networking equipment * Preparing, testing and troubleshooting IT hardware and systems * Assisting with the installation and configuration of business VoIP telephone systems * Supporting Microsoft 365 and cloud-based IT solutions * Attending customer sites to investigate and resolve technical issues * Assisting with customer installations, IT upgrades and infrastructure projects * Maintaining accurate technical records and project documentation * Taking on greater technical responsibility as your skills and experience develop What are we looking for? We're interested in candidates who can demonstrate: * Previous commercial experience in IT Support, networking, IT infrastructure or a similar technical role * Practical experience troubleshooting technical issues and configuring IT equipment * A good understanding of basic networking principles, including IP addressing, routers, switches or Wi-Fi * Some knowledge of Windows and Microsoft 365 environments * A logical approach to fault finding and problem solving * Good communication skills and confidence dealing with customers * A willingness to learn new technologies and develop practical engineering skills * A full UK driving licence Previous experience with VoIP telephone systems, network installations, firewalls or cloud technologies would be advantageous, but isn't essential. We're happy to consider candidates whose experience is stronger in some technical areas than others, provided they have a good foundation and the aptitude to develop. Why consider this opportunity? This is an opportunity to move into a more varied technical position with an established IT and telecoms business. Rather than spending every day on a helpdesk, you'll gain practical experience working on customer installations, troubleshooting equipment, supporting infrastructure projects and developing your knowledge of networking and business communications systems. You'll have the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers while gradually building the skills and confidence to take ownership of more complex work. This isn't a position for someone starting from scratch, but you don't need to know everything on day one. If you've already gained some relevant IT experience and are looking for an employer willing to help you develop into a capable Field Engineer, we'd be interested in hearing from you
