Lead Chemical Engineer - Process Safety

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Lead Chemical Engineer specializing in Process Safety to join their globally distributed team, working remotely from Belfast or surrounding areas. This critical role will involve leading the development and implementation of robust safety strategies across all chemical operations, ensuring compliance with stringent international regulations and best practices. You will be a key advisor on all matters related to process safety, working collaboratively with site engineers, management, and external bodies to foster a strong safety culture. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Process Safety Management (PSM) program.
• Conduct and oversee Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA studies.
• Provide expert guidance on safety design principles for new and modified chemical processes.
• Investigate process safety incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver comprehensive process safety training to engineering and operational staff.
• Stay abreast of evolving process safety regulations and industry standards, ensuring ongoing compliance.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience (10+ years) in process safety engineering within the chemical or petrochemical industry.
• In-depth knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, Seveso Directive).
• Proven track record in leading PHA studies and incident investigations.
• Excellent understanding of inherent safety design principles and risk assessment techniques.
• Strong leadership, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to operate effectively in a remote setting.
