Lead Cheminformatics Scientist

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Lead Cheminformatics Scientist to spearhead their cheminformatics efforts in Birmingham . This critical leadership position involves directing the design, development, and application of computational tools and databases to accelerate small molecule drug discovery. You will lead a team of scientists, fostering innovation and ensuring the efficient use of chemical data to guide research strategies. The successful candidate will bridge the gap between computational chemistry, data science, and medicinal chemistry, driving forward key discovery programs and contributing significantly to the company's pipeline success within the vibrant scientific hub of the West Midlands .

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of cheminformatics specialists, providing technical guidance and mentorship.
• Develop and implement novel computational strategies for compound library design, virtual screening, and lead optimization.
• Oversee the management, curation, and analysis of large chemical and biological datasets.
• Collaborate with medicinal chemists and biologists to interpret structure-activity relationships and guide synthesis efforts.
• Ensure the integration of cheminformatics tools and workflows into the drug discovery pipeline.
• Represent the cheminformatics function in project meetings and contribute to strategic decision-making.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Cheminformatics, Computational Chemistry, or a related field.
• Extensive experience (7+ years) in cheminformatics, with a proven track record in drug discovery environments.
• Strong expertise in chemical data representation, database management, and the use of standard cheminformatics software (e.g., RDKit, Schrödinger suite).
• Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing and mentoring scientific teams.
• Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python) and experience with data analysis and visualization techniques.
• Excellent understanding of medicinal chemistry principles and drug discovery processes.
