Lead Process Chemist - Pharmaceutical Development

About the Role

Our client is actively seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Process Chemist to join their esteemed pharmaceutical research and development division in Newcastle upon Tyne . This senior position is crucial for optimizing and scaling up chemical synthesis routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). You will play a key role in ensuring the efficient, safe, and cost-effective production of vital medicines, bridging the gap between laboratory-scale discovery and pilot plant operations. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, a meticulous approach to process development, and a commitment to adhering to the highest regulatory standards within a GxP-compliant environment, fostering innovation and excellence in chemical manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, optimize, and scale up chemical synthesis processes for novel APIs and intermediates, ensuring robustness and reproducibility.
• Lead troubleshooting efforts for process-related issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions to maintain production timelines.
• Design and conduct Design of Experiments (DoE) to define critical process parameters and establish control strategies.
• Author comprehensive process development reports, validation protocols, and regulatory submission documentation.
• Collaborate closely with analytical chemistry, formulation, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless technology transfer.

Requirements

• A Master's degree or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Process Chemistry, or a related discipline.
• Significant experience (7+ years) in pharmaceutical process development, with a focus on small molecule synthesis.
• In-depth knowledge of process safety assessment, hazard analysis (HAZOP), and risk management.
• Hands-on experience with common chemical synthesis equipment and analytical techniques relevant to process monitoring.
• Proven ability to lead project teams and manage multiple complex development projects simultaneously.
