Lead Process Development Chemist

About the Role

Our client is seeking an innovative and experienced Lead Process Development Chemist to join their cutting-edge research and development team based in Manchester . This role is central to advancing their product pipeline, focusing on the design, optimization, and scale-up of novel chemical synthesis routes. You will lead a team of talented chemists and technicians, translating laboratory discoveries into robust, commercially viable manufacturing processes. This position requires a deep understanding of synthetic chemistry, process engineering principles, and a passion for bringing new chemical innovations to market.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the process development activities for new chemical entities, from laboratory synthesis through to pilot-scale and manufacturing readiness.
• Design and optimize synthetic routes to ensure scalability, cost-effectiveness, safety, and environmental sustainability.
• Develop and validate analytical methods to support process development and quality control.
• Troubleshoot synthetic challenges and implement innovative solutions to overcome process bottlenecks.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, manufacturing, and regulatory affairs, to ensure project success.
• Mentor and guide junior chemists and technicians, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and teamwork.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Process Chemistry, or a related field.
• A minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in process development chemistry within the pharmaceutical or fine chemical industry.
• Demonstrated expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and reaction mechanism studies.
• Experience with scale-up challenges, process safety assessments, and technology transfer.
• Proficiency in analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, NMR, and MS.
• Excellent leadership, project management, and communication skills.
