Optical Network Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a dedicated Optical Network Engineer to join their operations team based in Manchester, Greater Manchester, UK . In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for the deployment, maintenance, and optimization of our fiber optic network infrastructure. You will play a crucial part in ensuring high-speed, reliable data transmission for our customers, working closely with field technicians and other engineering disciplines. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineer to contribute to a critical infrastructure project within a well-established telecommunications company, based firmly in their Manchester headquarters.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and test optical transmission equipment, including DWDM, OTN, and Ethernet systems.
• Perform regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fiber optic links and associated hardware.
• Monitor network health and performance using specialized optical test equipment and network management systems.
• Develop and implement detailed network designs and build plans for optical network expansions.
• Respond to network outages and service degradations, providing timely resolution and post-incident analysis.
• Collaborate with project managers and vendors to ensure timely and successful project delivery.

Requirements

• HND or Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline.
• Proven experience in optical network engineering, preferably within a service provider environment.
• Proficiency with fiber optic testing equipment (e.g., OTDR, optical power meters).
• Knowledge of DWDM, OTN, SONET/SDH, and Ethernet principles.
• Ability to interpret network schematics and technical documentation.
• Must be willing to travel occasionally to different sites and participate in an on-call rotation.
