Power Systems Protection Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Power Systems Protection Engineer to join their essential infrastructure team in Reading . This role is critical for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electrical grid by designing, implementing, and maintaining protection schemes for power systems. You will be responsible for safeguarding electrical equipment and ensuring minimal disruption in the event of faults or disturbances. The ideal candidate will possess a strong theoretical understanding of power system dynamics and practical experience with protection relays and systems, contributing significantly to the stability of the energy network.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, specify, and commission protection systems for generators, transformers, transmission lines, and distribution networks.
• Develop and maintain protection settings philosophies and coordination studies.
• Analyse fault records and system disturbances to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE) and company policies.
• Collaborate with design engineers, operations personnel, and equipment vendors.
• Provide technical support and training to junior engineers and field technicians.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Power Systems.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system protection engineering.
• Proficiency with protection relay settings software and simulation tools (e.g., ETAP, DigSILENT).
• In-depth knowledge of different types of protection relays and their applications.
• Strong understanding of fault analysis, load flow, and short circuit calculations.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
