Principal Chemist - Pharmaceutical Development

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Principal Chemist to lead critical projects within their Pharmaceutical Development department in Newcastle upon Tyne . This senior position requires a deep understanding of synthetic organic chemistry and its application in drug discovery and process development. You will be responsible for designing and executing complex synthetic routes, optimizing chemical processes, and ensuring the successful scale-up of drug candidates. This role is ideal for a visionary chemist who can drive innovation, mentor a team of scientists, and contribute significantly to the company's R&D objectives in Newcastle upon Tyne .

Key Responsibilities

• Design and synthesize novel organic compounds for pharmaceutical applications.
• Develop and optimize robust and scalable synthetic routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
• Lead process chemistry efforts, troubleshoot synthetic challenges, and ensure efficient scale-up.
• Characterize synthesized compounds using advanced analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC).
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including analytical development and formulation scientists.
• Mentor and guide junior chemists, fostering a culture of scientific rigor and innovation.

Requirements

• PhD in Organic Chemistry or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in synthetic organic chemistry, with a strong focus on pharmaceutical development.
• Demonstrated expertise in process chemistry and scale-up of complex molecules.
• Proficiency in modern synthetic methodologies and reaction optimization.
• Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation for compound characterization.
• Strong leadership capabilities and excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to manage projects and teams effectively.
