Principal Research Scientist - Medicinal Chemistry

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Principal Research Scientist with a specialization in Medicinal Chemistry to join their R&D team in Reading . This senior role is integral to designing and synthesizing novel small molecules for therapeutic development. You will lead projects, contribute to strategic decision-making, and collaborate closely with biologists and other disciplines. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of drug design principles, synthetic organic chemistry, and a proven track record of successfully advancing drug candidates. Key Responsibilities

• Design, synthesize, and optimize novel small molecules with desired pharmacological properties.
• Lead medicinal chemistry efforts for drug discovery programs, setting strategic direction and defining structure-activity relationships (SAR).
• Collaborate with biologists, pharmacologists, and DMPK scientists to drive programs from hit identification to lead optimization.
• Develop and implement efficient synthetic routes and purification strategies.
• Utilize computational chemistry and modeling tools to guide drug design.
• Supervise and mentor junior chemists, fostering scientific excellence and efficient project execution.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in medicinal chemistry within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
• Proven track record of designing and synthesizing novel compounds that have progressed through discovery pipelines.
• Extensive experience with modern synthetic organic chemistry techniques and analytical methods (NMR, MS, HPLC).
• Strong understanding of SAR, ADMET properties, and drug design principles.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
