Principal Research Scientist - Medicinal Chemistry

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly accomplished Principal Research Scientist with extensive experience in Medicinal Chemistry to join their innovative R&D team in Derby . This senior leadership role is critical for driving the design and synthesis of novel small molecules with therapeutic potential. You will be responsible for leading chemistry efforts on key projects, mentoring junior chemists, and contributing to the strategic direction of drug discovery programs. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, synthesis, and optimization of novel small molecule drug candidates targeting specific disease pathways.
• Develop and implement efficient synthetic routes for complex molecules, troubleshoot synthetic challenges, and ensure robust processes.
• Collaborate closely with biologists, pharmacologists, and DMPK scientists to advance projects from hit identification through lead optimization.
• Utilize structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis and computational chemistry tools to guide compound design.
• Mentor and guide junior medicinal chemists, fostering scientific excellence and professional development.
• Prepare high-quality scientific reports, presentations, and contribute to patent applications.

Requirements

• PhD in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with a strong publication record.
• Minimum of 8 years of post-doctoral or industry experience in medicinal chemistry, with a focus on drug discovery.
• Demonstrated expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, including asymmetric synthesis and modern catalytic methods.
• Proven track record of contributing to the progression of drug candidates into preclinical and/or clinical development.
• Experience with structure-based drug design and computational chemistry tools is highly desirable.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
