Principal Scientist - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished Principal Scientist to lead critical initiatives within their Drug Discovery department in Manchester . You will be responsible for driving the early-stage discovery pipeline, from target identification and validation through to lead optimization. This senior role requires a deep scientific understanding, strategic thinking, and the ability to foster innovation within a dynamic research environment. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully advancing drug candidates and a passion for translating complex biological insights into potential new medicines.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and execute complex research projects focused on identifying and validating novel drug targets.
• Design and oversee experimental strategies for hit identification, lead generation, and lead optimization campaigns.
• Utilize a broad range of biological assays and screening technologies to evaluate compound efficacy and mechanism of action.
• Interpret experimental data, draw robust conclusions, and communicate findings effectively to project teams and senior leadership.
• Mentor and guide junior scientists, fostering a high-performance research culture.
• Contribute to the strategic direction of the drug discovery portfolio and identify new areas of scientific opportunity.

Requirements

• PhD in Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• Substantial experience (10+ years) in drug discovery, with a strong emphasis on small molecule drug development or biologics.
• Expertise in at least one therapeutic area (e.g., oncology, immunology, neuroscience) and relevant target classes.
• Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams and delivering projects on time.
• Proficiency in diverse experimental techniques, including high-throughput screening, cell-based assays, and biophysical methods.
• Exceptional scientific judgment, problem-solving skills, and a publication record.
