Principal Scientist - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is seeking a visionary Principal Scientist to lead critical initiatives in drug discovery , working remotely across the UK. This senior role involves driving the strategic direction of early-stage drug discovery programs, from target identification and validation through to lead optimization. You will leverage your extensive expertise to build and manage virtual research collaborations, guide discovery teams, and champion innovative approaches to identifying novel therapeutics. This is a fully remote position offering the flexibility to contribute from anywhere, while making a significant impact on advancing life-saving medicines. The successful candidate will be a highly independent, strategic thinker with a deep scientific background and a passion for innovation in pharmaceutical research.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the strategic planning and execution of multiple drug discovery projects from inception to preclinical candidate nomination.
• Identify and validate novel drug targets and therapeutic modalities.
• Design and oversee the implementation of complex experimental strategies, including high-throughput screening and medicinal chemistry efforts.
• Manage and mentor a geographically dispersed team of scientists and external collaborators.
• Evaluate new technologies and approaches to enhance discovery capabilities.
• Author scientific reports, patents, and publications, and present findings to internal and external audiences.

Requirements

• PhD in Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a strong focus on drug discovery .
• Demonstrated success in leading discovery programs and delivering drug candidates into development.
• Expertise in small molecule drug discovery, target validation, and lead optimization.
• Experience managing external research collaborations and contract research organizations (CROs).
• Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and communication skills, suitable for a remote work environment.
