Principal Scientist - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Principal Scientist to join their dynamic drug discovery team based in Cardiff . This senior role will involve leading key research programs focused on identifying and validating novel drug targets for unmet medical needs. You will leverage your extensive expertise in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and early-stage development to drive the progression of drug candidates through the discovery pipeline. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including biologists, chemists, and toxicologists, to accelerate the development of innovative therapeutics. Key Responsibilities

• Lead and execute innovative research strategies within the drug discovery domain, focusing on target identification and validation.
• Design and synthesize novel small molecules with desired pharmacological properties, applying principles of medicinal chemistry .
• Conduct in vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies to characterize drug candidates and establish proof-of-concept.
• Collaborate effectively with discovery teams to optimize lead compounds and advance them towards preclinical development.
• Provide expert scientific guidance and mentorship to junior scientists and project teams.
• Author and contribute to scientific publications, patent applications, and regulatory submissions.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
• A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in pharmaceutical R&D , with a strong focus on small molecule drug discovery.
• Demonstrated success in leading research projects and advancing drug candidates through the discovery phases.
• Expertise in assay development, hit-to-lead optimization, and structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis.
• In-depth knowledge of various therapeutic areas and disease biology.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
