Principal Scientist - Structural Biology

About the Role

Our client is seeking a distinguished Principal Scientist with expertise in Structural Biology to join their state-of-the-art research facility in Bristol . This role is critical for elucidating the three-dimensional structures of key biological targets, providing essential insights for drug discovery and development programs. You will lead a team, employ a range of biophysical and biochemical techniques, and contribute significantly to the understanding of protein function and drug-protein interactions. This hybrid position requires a seasoned scientist capable of driving projects forward through both hands-on experimentation and strategic leadership. You will be at the forefront of molecular understanding.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead structural biology projects, employing techniques such as X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, and NMR spectroscopy.
• Determine high-resolution structures of target proteins and protein complexes relevant to disease.
• Optimize protein expression, purification, and crystallization/sample preparation for structure determination.
• Analyze and interpret structural data, integrating it with biochemical and biophysical data to understand mechanism of action.
• Collaborate closely with medicinal chemists and biologists to support structure-based drug design efforts.
• Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the strategic direction of the structural biology group.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field.
• A minimum of 10 years of post-doctoral research experience with a strong focus on structural biology, particularly in a drug discovery context.
• Demonstrated expertise in multiple structural biology techniques, including hands-on experience with X-ray crystallography and/or cryo-EM.
• Proven ability to solve challenging protein structures and interpret complex datasets.
• Experience leading research projects and mentoring scientific staff.
• Excellent communication skills and a strong publication record in high-impact journals.
