Principal Scientist - Synthetic Chemistry

About the Role

Our client is seeking a distinguished Principal Scientist with expertise in synthetic chemistry to lead critical research initiatives in their Sunderland facility. This role involves the design and execution of complex synthetic routes for novel chemical entities, with a focus on pharmaceutical applications. You will mentor junior chemists, drive innovation within the department, and contribute to strategic research planning. Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute multi-step synthetic routes for complex organic molecules, intermediates, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
• Lead and mentor a team of synthetic chemists, providing technical guidance and oversight.
• Develop and optimize synthetic processes for scalability, safety, and efficiency.
• Utilize advanced analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC) to characterize synthesized compounds.
• Collaborate with medicinal chemists, biologists, and process development teams to advance drug discovery projects.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in synthetic methodology and contribute to intellectual property generation.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or a related field.
• Extensive experience (8+ years) in synthetic organic chemistry, with a significant portion in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
• Demonstrated expertise in designing and executing complex, multi-step syntheses.
• Strong understanding of reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, and modern synthetic techniques.
• Proven ability to lead research projects and mentor junior scientists.
