Sales Application Engineer

Sales Applications Engineer

Peterborough | Office-based | Salary £48-58k (dependent on experience)

Calling experienced pump and hydraulics people. Are you…

ready to swap layers of sign-off for the freedom to think, question and act wishing you had the opportunity to deal with technical enquiries in more depth than ‘send a price and hope for the best’ keen to be known for what you contribute, rather than as employee number 4,783

And would you like to…

solve unusual water and wastewater problems using products that no other UK supplier can offer own an enquiry from the first conversation through to a well-considered technical solution join a small, agile business with real autonomy and the backing and network of a larger international group

Yes, that is quite a specific list. Hydromarque is quite a specific business.

Hydromarque holds the UK licence for selected specialist pump product lines. That means the team can offer solutions customers simply cannot source elsewhere in the UK – and it needs an experienced applications engineer who enjoys working out what will genuinely fit the problem.

The role

This is a technically led, customer-facing role at the heart of Hydromarque. You’ll talk to customers, draw out the detail behind their enquiry, select and develop the right solution, and turn it into clear quotations, tenders and proposals.

You’ll be responsible for:

handling technical enquiries by phone and email and asking the questions that uncover the real requirement; having an in-depth understanding of hydraulic systems analyses fostering customer relations by instilling trust through sound engineering advice and customer centric activities reviewing applications and selecting suitable pumps, systems and associated equipment; preparing accurate quotations, tenders and technical proposals; guiding customers through their options and adding value beyond simply selling a product; taking increasing ownership of applications, projects and the Hydromarque customer experience; working closely with colleagues, suppliers and the wider WTR Group; and contributing ideas that improve processes, service and the way the business works.

The role is primarily office-based in Peterborough. Site visits may be an option once you are fully product trained.

Even with strong sector experience, you won’t be expected to know Hydromarque’s specialist product range on day one. You’ll spend time learning alongside the team; realistically, that means a proper period of shadowing and product immersion rather than being handed a catalogue and wished good luck.

About you

How many of this list can you tick off

Substantial experience in hydraulics or a closely related environment; A sound understanding of applications, systems and how to translate a customer problem into a practical solution; A naturally analytical and inquisitive mind — you are comfortable unpacking complexity and are not easily bowled over by the numbers; Clear, professional communication, both written and spoken; The confidence to engage with customers, ask good questions and work comfortably with people in different roles and environments; Good Excel and general computer skills; and A proactive, adaptable approach and a genuine desire to add value.

Experience with self-priming pumps, rotating equipment, compressors, water authorities, wastewater, process engineering or technical solution selling could all be useful. Direct pump-sector knowledge is the ideal; an adjacent hydraulics background with strong transferable expertise may also make for a very interesting conversation.

What it’s like to work here

Hydromarque is a small team where Directors sit alongside everyone else, people help one another and there is no unnecessary hierarchy. The team works seriously at getting things right for customers, but does not believe that serious work requires a permanently serious face.

There are team lunches, cook-offs, celebrations and people who understand that you have a life outside work. You’ll be trusted to own your role, encouraged to improve how things are done and able to see the effect of your work. At the same time, Hydromarque is part of the WTR Group, giving the business the stability, supplier relationships and wider network of a much larger organisation while retaining day-to-day autonomy.

What’s on offer

A salary that reflects your experience; 25 days’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays; Employer pension contribution of 5%; Death in Service benefit (3x salary); Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate; A Company-performance bonus scheme; Access to the WTR Group employee share scheme; In-depth product training and mentoring; and A longer-term route towards senior applications responsibility and succession to a highly experienced member of the team.
