Senior Backend Engineer - API Development

About the Role

Our client is looking for a skilled Senior Backend Engineer specializing in API development to join their team in Wolverhampton . You will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining robust, scalable, and secure APIs that power their core products and services. This role requires a deep understanding of backend technologies, microservices architecture, and best practices in API design, ensuring seamless integration and high performance for their digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable RESTful APIs using modern backend languages and frameworks (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java).
• Implement and manage microservices architecture, ensuring loose coupling and independent deployability.
• Work with databases (SQL and NoSQL) to design efficient data models and optimize queries.
• Ensure the security, reliability, and performance of APIs through rigorous testing and monitoring.
• Collaborate with frontend developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to define API specifications and integration points.
• Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code, and participate actively in code reviews.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex backend issues in production environments.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 5+ years of experience in backend software development, with a significant focus on API development .
• Proficiency in designing and implementing RESTful APIs according to industry best practices.
• Strong experience with at least one backend programming language such as Node.js, Python, or Java.
• Experience with database technologies, including relational (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) databases.
• Familiarity with microservices patterns, containerization (Docker), and cloud platforms.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
