Senior Research Scientist - Medicinal Chemistry

About the Role

Our client is seeking an accomplished Senior Research Scientist specializing in Medicinal Chemistry to join their innovative drug discovery team based in Oxford . This role is pivotal in designing and synthesizing novel small molecules aimed at treating challenging diseases. You will play a key part in driving the hit-to-lead and lead optimization processes, collaborating closely with biologists, pharmacologists, and computational chemists. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of synthetic organic chemistry and a proven ability to contribute effectively to drug discovery programs in a dynamic research environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and synthesize novel small molecules with therapeutic potential, employing modern synthetic organic chemistry techniques.
• Optimize lead compounds to improve potency, selectivity, pharmacokinetic properties, and safety profiles.
• Collaborate with biologists to design and interpret in vitro and in vivo studies to assess compound efficacy and mechanism of action.
• Work closely with computational chemists to utilize structure-based drug design and cheminformatics tools.
• Manage multiple research projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of key milestones within the Oxford R&D department.
• Maintain detailed laboratory records and contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, patents, and publications.

Requirements

• PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in medicinal chemistry within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
• Proven track record in the design and synthesis of small molecules for drug discovery programs.
• Strong understanding of structure-activity relationships (SAR) and structure-based drug design principles.
• Proficiency in modern synthetic techniques, purification methods (e.g., HPLC), and structural characterization (e.g., NMR, Mass Spectrometry).
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
