Job Description
Senior Technical Designer
Location: Berkshire
Salary: Up to £75,000 + Commission
Working Arrangements: Hybrid – office, site and home
The Opportunity
We’re working with a highly respected contractor specialising in commercial design and build to find an experienced Senior Technical Designer to join their team in Berkshire.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong designer to take a leading role in the delivery of high-quality commercial workplace and interior fit-out projects, from initial concept development through to construction and completion.
Working at the heart of a collaborative design and build environment, you’ll bridge the gap between creative vision and technical delivery, ensuring designs are not only visually compelling but also practical, compliant, cost-effective and ready to build.
You’ll work closely with clients, consultants, contractors and internal project teams, taking ownership of technical design coordination and helping drive projects forward to successful delivery. With a strong reputation in the market and a commitment to quality, this is an opportunity to join an established contractor where technical expertise, collaboration and commercial awareness are genuinely valued.
The role offers a hybrid working arrangement, combining time in the Berkshire office, visits to project sites and the flexibility to work from home. With a salary of up to £75,000 plus commission, this is an attractive opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their technical design career.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the technical design and coordination of commercial workplace and fit-out projects from concept through to construction and final handover.
Develop, review and manage comprehensive technical design packages, including drawings, specifications, construction details and associated documentation.
Coordinate architectural, structural, MEP and specialist consultant information to deliver fully integrated, coordinated and buildable solutions.
Translate design intent into technically robust, compliant and commercially viable outcomes, balancing quality, programme and budget requirements.
Lead technical reviews, design coordination meetings and BIM processes, including model reviews and clash detection.
Identify, assess and resolve technical challenges, design risks and coordination issues throughout the project lifecycle.
Ensure designs meet relevant UK Building Regulations, CDM requirements, health and safety legislation and applicable industry standards.
Support planning applications, statutory approvals and construction-stage delivery, managing RFIs, technical queries, design changes and on-site technical issues.
Work closely with project managers, commercial teams, site teams and external stakeholders to maintain design quality and keep projects on track.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members, promoting best practice, consistency and continuous improvement.
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and project stakeholders, helping ensure a smooth and successful project delivery process.
About You
You’ll be an experienced Senior Technical Designer with a strong background in commercial interiors, workplace design or design and build. You’ll be confident taking ownership of technical design packages, coordinating multiple disciplines and delivering high-quality, buildable solutions in a fast-paced project environment.
You’ll combine excellent technical knowledge with a practical, solutions-focused mindset and understand how to translate design intent into detailed technical information that works both on paper and on site.
You’ll ideally bring:
A degree or relevant qualification in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Architectural Technology or a related discipline.
At least five years’ experience in technical design and project delivery, ideally within commercial fit-out, workplace interiors or a design and build environment.
Strong, hands-on experience using Revit is essential, with the ability to produce, develop and coordinate detailed technical design packages and construction information.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and experience with BIM coordination tools and processes.
A thorough understanding of UK Building Regulations, construction detailing, technical specifications and design coordination.
Experience coordinating architectural, structural, MEP and specialist consultant information to deliver fully integrated design solutions.
The ability to identify technical challenges early and develop practical, compliant and cost-effective solutions.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to lead technical discussions and coordinate diverse project teams.
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate, high-quality work to programme.
A good understanding of commercial drivers, project budgets and the relationship between design decisions and construction costs.
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle would be advantageous, given the need to travel between the Berkshire office and project sites.
Experience with BREEAM, WELL or LEED standards, alongside knowledge of Building Safety requirements, CDM Regulations and design risk management, would also be advantageous.
Personal Attributes
We’re looking for someone who is proactive, detail-oriented and takes real pride in the quality of their work.
You’ll be a collaborative team player who can confidently take the lead when required, communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels and remain focused on finding solutions when technical challenges arise.
A strong commercial mindset, a commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to balance design quality with practical delivery will be key to success in this role.
What’s on Offer?
Salary up to £75,000, depending on experience.
Commission in addition to the basic salary.
Hybrid working, combining office-based work, project site visits and working from home.
The opportunity to join a well-respected contractor with an established reputation in commercial design and build.
Involvement in the delivery of high-quality workplace and commercial interior projects.
A collaborative environment where technical expertise and design quality are valued.
The opportunity to take ownership of projects, influence technical delivery and support the development of the wider design team.
