Substation Engineer

About the Role

Our client seeks a skilled Substation Engineer to join their team in Edinburgh . This role is central to the design, development, and maintenance of critical electrical substation infrastructure that forms the backbone of the energy network. You will be involved in all stages of substation projects, from conceptual design through to commissioning and operational support. The position requires a strong understanding of high-voltage equipment, protection systems, and grid connection requirements, ensuring the reliable and safe operation of the energy infrastructure. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on key projects within the energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and specify electrical systems for high-voltage substations, including switchgear, transformers, busbars, and protection relays.
• Develop single-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, and detailed layout drawings for substation projects.
• Perform power system studies , including fault level calculations, protection coordination, and load flow analysis.
• Manage substation construction and commissioning activities, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and external vendors to deliver substation projects effectively.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for existing substation assets.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in substation engineering or design.
• Strong knowledge of high-voltage equipment, protection schemes, and earthing systems.
• Experience with substation design software and simulation tools.
• Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g., IEC, BS, ENA).
• Excellent project management and communication skills.
