Job Description
Technical & Compliance Manager
Location: East Sussex Salary: £50,000-£60,000 plus discretionary bonus Contract: Permanent, full-time Working arrangement: Hybrid - three days on site and two days working from home.
A growing premium health and wellness brand is looking for a Technical & Compliance Manager to take ownership of its technical compliance function and help shape its next stage of growth.
Developing and supplying a broad range of nutritional supplements, the business needs someone who can combine strong technical knowledge with clear, practical advice across product compliance, quality systems, labelling, claims and supplier standards.
This is a broad, hands-on role with genuine influence. You’ll work closely with colleagues across the business, strengthen the systems behind its products and help teams make confident, well-informed decisions from development through to launch.
The role
Working closely with NPD, Marketing, Operations and Supply Chain, you will ensure products are safe, compliant and supported by robust technical processes.
Your responsibilities will include:
Owning, maintaining and continuously improving the Quality Management System
Writing and embedding practical SOPs, policies, specifications and technical documentation
Ensuring compliance with applicable UK food supplement and labelling requirements
Reviewing and approving product labels, health and nutrition claims, and marketing content
Supporting NPD from initial concept through to launch, identifying technical risks early and helping resolve them
Providing clear technical and compliance sign-off before products and campaigns go live
Managing complaints, investigations, corrective and preventive actions, and continuous improvement
Leading supplier approval, risk assessment, technical reviews and ongoing monitoring
Overseeing post-manufacture testing requirements, reviewing results and supporting product release decisions
Planning and conducting internal audits, and coordinating supplier and external audit activity
Maintaining relevant quality standards and certifications, including SALSA
Advising colleagues on technical requirements and confidently challenging decisions where necessary
Supporting and developing a Compliance Assistant
What we are looking for
You’ll bring hands-on technical or compliance experience within food supplements, nutraceuticals, food or a closely related regulated consumer products business.
We’re particularly interested in someone with:
Strong knowledge of UK food supplement legislation, product labelling and permitted claims
Experience taking responsibility for a QMS and improving how it works in practice
A track record of writing SOPs and managing complaints, investigations and corrective actions
Direct experience of SALSA, ideally alongside exposure to BRCGS or other relevant quality standards
Experience conducting internal audits and preparing for external audits
Confidence assessing suppliers, reviewing technical documentation and interpreting product testing results
Experience supporting NPD and making clear compliance decisions ahead of launch
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to explain technical requirements clearly
Sound commercial judgement, with the confidence to hold a firm position when needed
A collaborative, proactive approach and an appetite for working in a smaller, growing business
Familiarity with Soil Association and Vegan Society certification requirements would be an advantage.
You will ideally have at least three to five years of relevant experience and a degree in Nutrition, Food Science or a related discipline, although equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
Previous people-management experience is not essential. Technical credibility, sound judgement and the ability to take ownership matter most.
The opportunity
This is an opportunity to shape a key function within a growing, purpose-led health and wellness business. You’ll have a varied remit, close working relationships across departments and the scope to make a visible difference to how the business operates.
The package includes:
£50,000-£60,000 salary
Discretionary bonus
Flexible start and finish times around core hours
Summer Friday finishes
Genuine scope to develop and strengthen the technical compliance function
