Technical Director - Animation

About the Role

Our client is seeking an accomplished Technical Director for Animation to lead their technical vision in Manchester . You will be responsible for defining and driving the animation technology pipeline, ensuring our character and creature animations are state-of-the-art, efficient, and artist-friendly. This senior role requires a deep understanding of animation principles, rigging, pipeline tools, and real-time engine capabilities. You will collaborate extensively with animation leads, character artists, riggers, and engineers to solve complex technical challenges and empower the animation team to achieve their creative goals. Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the development and maintenance of the animation tool pipeline , ensuring it meets the needs of the animation team.
• Collaborate with engineers to implement and optimize animation systems, including rigging , skinning, and character control within game engines.
• Develop and document technical specifications and best practices for animation production.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to animation, rigging, and engine integration.
• Evaluate and integrate new technologies and software to improve animation workflow efficiency and quality.
• Provide technical guidance and support to the animation and rigging teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in animation technology, with a significant portion in a Technical Director or Lead Technical Artist role within the gaming industry .
• Expertise in character rigging, skinning, and animation systems, particularly within Unreal Engine or similar engines.
• Strong proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, MEL) and C++.
• Experience with 3D animation software packages (e.g., Maya, Blender).
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple complex technical challenges simultaneously.
• Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to foster collaboration across departments.
