Job Description
Are you an experienced Workshop & Maintenance Manager looking to take your career to the next level? A leading provider of operational services to the steel, mining, and bulk materials handling industries is seeking a highly skilled individual to lead our maintenance operation from our Cardiff workshop. This role offers a competitive salary of £45,000 - £50,000 per year, along with a range of benefits including bereavement leave, free parking, a company pension, casual dress, and an on-site canteen.
This permanent, full-time position requires a hands-on leader to manage a team of technicians, ensuring the reliability and cost-effective maintenance of a diverse fleet of heavy mobile plant and equipment. The role is site-based in Cardiff and includes overtime and weekend availability, typically working Monday to Friday.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the workshop team, ensuring a safe and productive environment.
- Plan and deliver preventative maintenance activities based on machine operating hours and manufacturer recommendations.
- Prioritise and coordinate breakdown repairs to minimise equipment downtime.
- Allocate work effectively and monitor workshop productivity.
- Develop and maintain maintenance schedules, service plans, and inspection programmes.
- Manage supplier relationships, obtain quotations, and source parts cost-effectively.
- Oversee parts purchasing and inventory control.
- Conduct maintenance cost analysis and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.
- Manage and improve the company's oil sampling and condition monitoring programme.
- Liaise with operations teams to ensure machinery availability.
- Supervise external contractors and specialist repair providers.
- Investigate equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
- Support continuous improvement projects across maintenance operations.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Deliver training, mentoring, and technical support to workshop personnel.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Experience managing a busy plant or heavy equipment workshop.
- Plant Maintenance, Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, Engineering, or related discipline.
- Strong experience with heavy mobile and fixed plant equipment.
- Advanced fault-finding and diagnostic capabilities across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine management systems.
- Experience using OEM diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting tools.
- Proven experience in maintenance planning and fleet management.
- Strong understanding of maintenance KPIs, cost management, and budgeting.
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams).
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with CAT, Sennebogen, Develon, material handlers, loading shovels, excavators, telehandlers, terminal tractors, and tipping trailers.
- Tyre chain installation and repair.
- Oil analysis and condition monitoring programmes.
- Welding and fabrication processes.
- Maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent qualification.
