Principal Scientist - Structural Biology

About the Role

Our client is seeking a distinguished Principal Scientist with expertise in Structural Biology to join their world-class research campus in Cambridge . This senior role is central to elucidating the molecular mechanisms of disease and drug action through advanced structural biology techniques. You will lead efforts in protein expression, purification, crystallization, and structure determination using X-ray crystallography and Cryo-EM. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of protein structure-function relationships, extensive hands-on experience with cutting-edge structural biology methodologies, and a proven ability to lead complex research projects and mentor scientific staff within a highly collaborative and innovative research setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and execute projects focused on determining high-resolution structures of target proteins and protein complexes using X-ray crystallography and Cryo-EM.
• Optimize protocols for protein expression, purification, and characterization.
• Manage the use and maintenance of specialized structural biology equipment.
• Interpret complex structural data and relate it to biological function and drug discovery efforts.
• Collaborate closely with medicinal chemists, biochemists, and computational biologists.
• Mentor and guide junior scientists and research associates in structural biology techniques.
• Contribute to the scientific strategy and publications stemming from structural biology research.

Requirements

• PhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field.
• Significant post-doctoral and/or industry experience (8+ years) in applying X-ray crystallography and/or Cryo-EM to solve protein structures.
• Expertise in protein expression and purification techniques for challenging targets.
• Proficiency in data processing, model building, and refinement of structural data.
• Experience with biophysical techniques for characterizing protein stability and interactions.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential for this role in Cambridge .
