Job Description
Hr Manager
Location: Hull
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
Are you an experienced HR generalist who enjoys being involved across the full people agenda?
We are supporting a successful and growing SME in Hull as they recruit an HR Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day HR function and help shape its wider people strategy.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is a varied, hands-on role covering everything from employee relations, recruitment and HR administration through to engagement, learning and development, performance management and culture.
You will work closely with managers and employees across the business, providing practical advice, ensuring the company remains compliant and helping to create an environment where people can perform, develop and enjoy coming to work.
This would suit a confident all-round HR professional who is comfortable operating independently within an SME. You won’t be someone who wants to focus on just one area of HR; you will enjoy the variety that comes with being the go-to person for all people-related matters.
The Role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the first point of contact for HR queries from managers and employees.
- Managing employee relations matters including absence, performance, grievances, disciplinaries and difficult conversations.
- Providing practical and commercially sensible advice in line with employment law and HR best practice.
- Managing HR administration including contracts, letters, employee records and right-to-work documentation.
- Reviewing and updating HR policies, procedures and supporting documentation.
- Managing recruitment activity from defining roles and advertising vacancies through to interviews, offers and onboarding.
- Developing an effective onboarding experience for new employees.
- Supporting managers with performance reviews, objectives and employee development.
- Identifying training needs and helping to create practical learning and development initiatives.
- Coordinating employee engagement, recognition and wellbeing activities.
- Supporting internal communication across the business.
- Helping to embed company values and maintain a positive, consistent culture.
- Monitoring changes to employment legislation and ensuring the business remains compliant.
- Producing relevant HR information and reports for the senior leadership team.
- Supporting wider people projects as the company continues to grow.
The Candidate
We are looking for someone with solid generalist HR experience gained within a busy and varied environment.
You should be comfortable moving between the operational and more people-focused elements of HR. One day you may be managing a sensitive employee relations matter or updating a policy; the next you could be recruiting, supporting a manager or organising an employee engagement initiative.
You will ideally have:
- Broad, hands-on HR generalist experience.
- Strong knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
- Experience handling employee relations matters confidently and independently.
- Experience managing recruitment and onboarding.
- The ability to build trusted relationships with employees, managers and senior leaders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisation and attention to detail.
- The confidence to challenge constructively and make sound, balanced decisions.
- A discreet and professional approach when handling confidential information.
- CIPD qualification, be working towards this, or possess equivalent practical experience.
Experience within an SME or owner-managed business would be particularly useful, as would exposure to learning and development, internal communications or employee engagement.
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing business that genuinely wants HR to play an important role in its continued development.
You will have the autonomy to take ownership of the HR function, improve existing processes and introduce new ideas, while working closely with a Managing Director who is invested in building a positive culture and developing the team.
If you are an approachable, commercially aware and capable HR generalist looking for a role where you can make a visible difference, we would be keen to hear from you.
