Mortgage Underwriter

About the Role

Our client is looking for an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join their busy lending team based in Southampton . This role is essential in evaluating mortgage applications, assessing risk, and making informed decisions to approve or decline loans. You will work closely with mortgage advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure that all lending meets regulatory standards and company policies. This is a key position within the mortgage division of the banking and finance sector, contributing directly to the company's lending success.

Key Responsibilities

• Review mortgage applications, including supporting documentation, to assess borrower eligibility and risk.
• Analyze credit reports, income verification, property valuations, and other relevant data.
• Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with company policies, lending guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Communicate decisions and requirements clearly to mortgage advisors and applicants.
• Identify potential fraud indicators and escalate suspicious applications.
• Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and file documentation.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and policies within Southampton .

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Mortgage Underwriter or in a similar lending assessment role.
• Solid understanding of mortgage products, lending criteria, and the mortgage lifecycle.
• Knowledge of relevant regulations such as the Mortgage Market Review (MMR) and consumer credit rules.
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with excellent attention to detail.
• Proficiency in using underwriting software and standard office applications.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with colleagues and clients.
